Analogue Island, 2009

The following are thin-paneled wood boxes with a hidden compartment from which sound is emitted. I pressed an organic compound made from spent espresso grinds and mollasses onto the inner face of the boxes in the shape of the negative space of a funnel. These pressed shapes had no support other than the adherent quality of the molasses and were meant to progressively fracture and collapse over time. To me, the tenuous pressing of the espresso forms mirrored the whispery pressure of mathieu’s sounds. Much of the sound also felt as if it were sonically burrowing through liquid or sand, and I think that is also where the channel form emerged.

Desert Project, 2008

In this project, I excavated a certain tonnage of lakebed dirt from the Utah west desert and installed at the Tanner Atrium at Westminster College. In addition to the main atrium, I installed a second component in the main stairwell leading to the black box theatre. The main atrium featured piles of lakebed dirt, the ground plane filled with salt crystals. A video sequence (filmed in the west desert) was triple projected onto the walls behind the floor installation. The stairwell featured a circular video projection onto the high ceiling above (a sequence also filmed at the excavation site), and a video projection along the curved walls of the stairwells base. At the base of the stairwell, I built a large mound of the same dirt.
