For what it’s worth, it’s almost impossible today to understand just how repugnant and threatening people found this music when it first appeared. I know, because I was there. If I was teaching a class on music or 70s culture, and not the Middle Ages, it would be my job to bring this moment back to life for you. A formidable task, to say the very least.
